Employment law developments in Slovakia

Employment law developments in Slovakia

Bratislava, 9 March 2020

There are a number of employment law modifications that are becoming applicable in Slovakia in 2020 that we discuss below.

Posted workers

An employee posted to work in Slovakia will be guaranteed the application of Slovakian labour law provisions. These include the conditions of accommodation provided by the employer to employees outside their usual place of work and travel expenses. However, for long-term postings (more than 12 or 18 months) the labour legislation will be applicable almost in its entirety.

Sports vouchers

The employers have now the opportunity to contribute to the costs of employees’ children’s sports activities provided that the beneficiary employee has been employed for at least two years and the employee submits an accounting document issued by an authorised person, which must be a registered sports organisation. Any employee must apply for the allowance and it is limited to 55% of the eligible expenditure, up to a maximum of EUR 275 per calendar year.

The minimum wage for 2020

The gross monthly and hourly minimum wage for 2020 has been set at EUR 580 and the hourly wage will be EUR 3.333 per worked hour. The monthly wage increases by EUR 60 and the hourly wage increases by EUR 0.344.

The assistance of a spouse, sibling or direct relative

In the event that an entrepreneur is assisted by a direct relative, sibling or spouse, this cannot be considered as illegal work or illegal employment.

However, it should be ensured that the employee is either a student under the age of 26, or pension insured, or already receiving a pension.

Five weeks’ leave for under-33s

We note that employees under the age of 33 can enjoy five weeks of holiday from 2020 provided that they are responsible for taking care of a child permanently.
